Banned by Facebook

What an honor! Someone found my previous blog post, Conservative Thumbs, offensive enough to ask Facebook to shut off access to it. Maybe even more than one person. Maybe a whole stupid of Conservatives!
And they did. Just like that.

I suppose it's easy enough to be banned for linking to a porn site or some racist rant or a terrorist site. No brainer. But my mini-screed, meant to cause a chuckle by illustrating the slow-to-learn nature of Conservative knuckle-draggers and to tie that propensity to a recent science news story? Somebody or bodies just couldn't take it, I guess.

Of course, I quickly commented on my own Facebook post and provided a new link to the blog post. Let's see how long it takes for the company that gives you "What Decade Fits Your Personality Best?" to ban a comment on a ban of a political opinion.

Trying to talk to someone at Facebook must be akin to getting permission to hold a séance in the Sistine Chapel. I did find this FAQ item, below.

Unfortunately, my first fears have been confirmed. Users can complain and Facebook will take action without letting the banned user know who complained or why. Not only that, Facebook will not reveal the criteria they use to determine what is banned or for how long.

Capriciously dictatorial, I'd say.

I was blocked or disabled

I have been blocked from using a feature.
Facebook has policies to stop behavior that other users may find annoying or abusive. Even if you did not have this intention, Facebook systems have determined that you were repeatedly using the same feature in a short period of time.

Since you did not adhere to previous warnings, a temporary block was set on your account. Here's what you should keep in mind about your block:
This temporary block will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
Attempting to use this feature while you are blocked can extend the block.
We cannot lift this block for any reason, so please be patient and refrain from using this feature for a few days while waiting for this block to be removed.
Once you are allowed to use this feature again, you must significantly slow down or stop this behavior. Further misuse of site features may result in more blocks or your account being permanently disabled.
Unfortunately, Facebook cannot provide any specifics on the rate limits that are enforced. The threshold at which you are warned is not a specific number, but rather determined by different factors, such as speed, time, and quantity.

Maybe they're just checking it out while it's blocked. Is that possible?

I had something like this happen before with GoDaddy over an e-mail I sent out that was construed as spam by (I think) one person. It's frustrating, because the whistleblowers can hid their identities and you can be stuck in any case. My feeling is that if Facebook (or anyone else) wants to deny you service, they can do so, but they should also present you with the specifics of the complaints. In rare circumstances should accusers' identities be shielded. Facebook is not a court of law, however, and can do what it wants -- but it's probably trying to AVOID some frivolous lawsuit itself.

This is amazing, funny, and a little disturbing. Now you have a new title you can add to your bio, Facebook martyr. Keep up the good work!

Right. And just think of the control a few freaks could gain by just watching and complaining.

Dave,

You were right, perhaps. My notice of the Conservative Thumbs post works again.

What lessons have we learned?

Peter "INYERFACEBOOK" Lloyd?

I like it! I wonder ..... if we all started making references to "Facebook Fascists" would they take their url and go home? I think there's a song here. Hmmmmm - the melody of 'Ghosts Riders (writers?) In the Sky' keeps spammin' through my head.

Dale,

They do work like ghosts, don't they. Too cowardly to show their faces (even on Facebook) or to give their names or to express their concerns. Like the squirrely kid who always volunteered to be hall monitor for the teacher and take names. If I remember correctly, the tough guys found him out and gave him a taste of a urinal wafer. Not that I endorse that kind of thing, but it rings with a kind of poetic justice. I don't think any culture shows much respect for the anonymous stool pigeon.
