Conservative Thumbs

News: Evidence that Neanderthals may have mated with humans at more than one point in evolutionary history. Of course! That explains the Conservative strain that runs through our otherwise noble race.

I know it's bad form and not conducive to dialog to call Conservatives names, but as far as I'm concerned the time for dialog is over. It ended somewhere between Reagan's shell game of trickle down, voodoo economics and Shrub's "Mission Accomplished" fiasco.

Argue with morons and you end up in the loony bin. I'm headed in the other direction.

The fact is that everything we cherish here in America comes from Liberal thinking and action. Starting with our Revolution, through Abolition, to Civil Rights. It's not my job to coax Teabaggers down from their trees and hate-radio demagogues off the air.

Patience: Neanderthal Conservatives eventually discard their caveman causes. Most no longer support slavery, Prohibition, segregation, separate but equal, the Dred Scott Decision, and the like. We had to drag them kicking and screaming, but they came around.

Eventually they'll drop their opposition to universal health care, stem cell research, gays in the military, and bans on gay marriage. Then when they get used to their political prehensile thumbs, they'll stop denying global warming, the Holocaust, Evolution—the kind of progressive stuff we Liberals have embraced since the Enlightenment.

But for now, I'm tuning them out!

Facebook banned This!!! Pathetic. Why?
Nancy.

Nancy,

I may try to penetrate the walls of Facebook to see if they can explain, but it looks as if when someone says they are offended, Facebook bans it. In Facebook's words, "reported as abusive by Facebook users." They did not tell me who complained or why.

If this is the story, it's pretty scarey. According to my post that follows this, Banned by Facebook, Facebook is controlling more and more of the web's activity. That could mean the entire network could end up containing nothing that offends anybody.

Peter

You and I don't agree on politics, generally, but being "offended" has become such an industry these days, I am afraid many companies are afraid NOT to deal with "offenses."

I believe trickle down, despite the unfortunate name, works, and ending segregation required the help of conservative Republicans. Let's see:

I am against Universal Health Care because of the socioeconomic problems with it, not because I "don't care about poor people."

I am in favor of stem cell research (not goofy about abortion as a source, but that's not my decision anyway). PS: I don't like abortion in general, but I struggle with the balance of rights issue there, and I don't want to make it illegal.

I don't deny the Holocaust (no conservatives do as far as I know), but I seriously question, man-made global warming.

I don't want prayer in public schools as a policy, but if students should have a choice individually.

I don't deny evolution. People who do that truly ARE morons who don't understand science.

Gays in the military? Let the generals decide -- I don't care, and I don't think there's any evidence that it's a problem -- but defense is not a social experiment or social program.

Gay marriage? I think there may be some legal bugs to work out, but it's not a big issue for me.

I do NOT believe the United States is a "Christian Nation." It's just a nation where there are a lot of Christians. The founders were much more interested in the rights of individuals than fealty to the Lord.

Where am I on your conservative continuum? Hey, I should be "offended," shouldn't I?

Seriously, let the spirited debate continue. Facebook was wrong to remove this.

Time will probably eventually make Facebook a social institution of sorts, in which case, much like a newspaper it should be a platform for healthy political debate. Maybe at this point, as it's still relatively new, they just want to connect people on a more material level. I don't agree with it, though. Your comments weren't hateful.

You could of posted 95% of your opinion without name calling

How in the heck can you call yourself a Conservative, Dave? in answer to your longer post. You're one of my friends whose Liberal heart hasn't bled in a while. I think we agree much more than we realize. How could we have worked so well together?

Peter

Catherine,

I agree, less nannyism will make Facebook much more interesting. Right now it's still mired in "who's your favorite" 7th grade kind of stuff. I like it for seeing what friends are up to, not for a lot of intellectual stimulation. Although it looks like I've done some stimulating.

Peter

Anonymous,

You could of [sic] at least left your name.

Peter

They block your blog yet, "DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZIE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN" (with 1million+ fans) is acceptable, according to FB? I am appalled.

Jenny,

I heard about that.
Because I support Freedom of Speech, I wouldn't do it, but imagine if a group of Liberals systematically complained about anything conservative on Facebook. In no time all of Facebook would be more vanilla than it alread is. It's better when opinions fly free.

Hate spew, like the demonic "prayer" you cite, doesn't even rise to the level of speech, much less opinion.

Peter

The ignorance of people boggles the mind. We can pray our current President dead but don't dare say anything negative about the former (idiot) President.

You're right, Uncle Pete, but it still pisses me off.

Steve,

The difference between praying for Obama's death and calling Bush an idiot is huge. The gap alone makes them entirely different things. But the other difference is that calling Bush and idiot is true!

Peter

How did prayer get into this debate? I'll let God sort that out. Now wishing or praying evil upon someone IS a bad thing to do...but I can't say that even at the worst I didn't hear many liberals pray for Bush's death.
Now Tea Partiers...They're another crew altogether. Who was surprised by Sarah Palin's "reload" comment? There's a charmer for you.
Nancy

Nancy,

There's definitely a difference in the way the opposite camps operate. It serves as an early warning system. As soon as I hear certain sterotypes associated with the requisite hate, I know I'm dealing with a potential tea bagger. The rest is as if it came from a script right off of hate radio.

Peter
